AT HOME ON PEAKS ISLAND

Hey there!

I thought it might be fun to revisit this post from 2017. Our love of the island has grown over the years and we’ve decided to make it our full time home. We’re moving to the other side of the island to a year round cottage in Spar Cove next month. It’s exciting and bittersweet at the same time. It will be fun to feather our new nest…but we will always be grateful that this was our first cottage…it’s charm and family history welcomed us with open arms. I’ll check back in soon with loads of pictures and lots to chat about. Until then…enjoy the last bit of Summer. XO

I hope your summer was good.

Ours had a rocky start with our pup Della getting very sick and needing major surgery early July. Thank God all went well and she’s back to her old self again.

We also took the big leap and put our family home on the market, which meant sorting, purging & packing the stuff we’d collected over the past 30 years. That could be another whole blog post in itself- Organizing/Staging-keeping my sanity!!

On the flip side, we celebrated a college graduation, our 30th wedding anniversary and I turned 50-woot woot!! All of these events shared with good friends and family-so really, it was a great summer.

INSPIRATION

About a week ago I thought I’d go back and re-read my very first post titled Inspiration to remind myself of where I started on this bloggin’ train. To see if I was on the same path or if I needed to shake it up a bit. It’d been so long since I’d written it I wondered if it sounded too sappy, too serious…

You know what- it is exactly what I would write today.

Our home is a collection of who we are. It’s where we relax, invite friends in and always have a cold beer in the fridge ready to crack open. Only these days it might be a glass of my favorite rose instead.

The funny thing about that post was that I included pictures of our home in South Portland, because that’s where I was physically writing from at the time, but really it describes our cottage on Peaks- to a tee.

So I thought I’d invite you in.

WELCOME

HISTORY

The cottage was built in 1898. It was owned and well loved by the Silva family before us. Most of the beautiful antique/vintage wood furniture came with the house. We were lucky enough to hear some great stories, told by the Silva’s, about these pieces and how they were originally brought over to the island. We knew they were special and needed to be well taken care of.

We added our own personal touch by re-upholstering some chairs, re-purposing the buffet into a bar and bringing in some of our own comfy Netflix watching furniture.

COLOR

We went with the colors surrounding us outside-gray/blue/green, with a burst of burnt orange here and there.

And, we used old wood found under the house for shelving.

LOCAL ART

Since moving to the island we’ve collected a piece of local art from the GEM gallery every year for an anniversary, birthday etc..  Works by Paul Brahms and Jessica George are our favorites.

A friend was visiting this summer and commented that “it creeks in all the right places” -he’s right, that’s absolutely what we love about it. It has a lived-in feel that tells the story of us and generations of a wonderful family before us.

Cheers!!
